Song: FaSoLa Fourth of July
« on: October 05, 2008, 06:41:26 PM »
Ok, here is a test. Every 4th of July, Joe Rumore would play a song titled: "FaSoLa Fourth of July" It was a song about going to a FaSoLa, or Sacred Harp singing on the 4th of July, which used to be a tradition years ago in Alabama, and other Southern states.
One verse went like this:
"There's a tree that's might shady, where I'll do my yo-de-la-de, and I'll pick me out a girl that's passing by.
If I get her in my buggy, I will get a little huggy,
At the singing on the 4th of July."
I don't believe Joe Rumore ever let a 4th of July go by without playing that song.
Does anyone remember the song, and some additional verses? (Even Google struck out on this one.)

That was the name of the song Fa-So-La. I will try to find it in dad's studio and get it posted here on the site if possible so we can all hear it once again. Thanks for the memories.

Joe would also play a song on election day called "git out and vote". I think of it often when I go to the pole. Wish I could find that record.

I don't remember Joe playing "Get Out and Vote" so it may have been before my time. I know I remember Duke playing a couple of lines of that song during commercial breaks on the Election Days during his tenure at 850 WYDE when they played country music. I think he played it during the early '70s.

I do remember Joe playing "Fa-So-La" by Terry Fell on his show during the '60s. Do you know when Terry recorded it? I remember a line in the song mentioning "a watermelon; gonna cut it on the 4th of July..." in one of the verses or something to that effect; I know it mentioned something about a watermelon. In fact I sure wish I had some watermelon right now!(LOL!)

I have the first 2 verses and part of the 3rd verse:
There's a happy time a-waitin',and the people congregatin'
So hand me down my collar and tie
Put my horse to the buggy and we'll go a chuggy
To the singin' on the fourth of July
(Chorus,fa so la,etc)
There's a tree thats mighty shady,where I'll do my yodel-a-dee
And I'll pick me out a girl passin' by
If I get her in my buggy I will get a little huggy
At the singin' on the 4th of July
(Chorus)
>then in the 3rd verse I don't know how it starts but it finishes:
I'm so happy I could holler cause I got a silver dollar
Gonna spend it on the 4th of July.
Song written and performed by Terry Fell, original singer of Truck Drivin' Man,Born May 13,1921 in Dora,(Walker county)AL

Sorry, I made a mistake on the first entry about a verse to the Fa So La 4th of July song.
Another verse goes like this:

Oh the crops are really growing,
And the rooster's are a crowing,
And the corn it got so big I laid it by,
And there ain't a bit a telling,
I might have a watermellon,
Gonna pluck it on the 4th of July.

I've song this song often to my children on the 4th. I have also tried to find it on the web with no success. My sister and I try to figure the other lines to the song, but always fall short of a few lines.

My guess is that my family, among others across Alamama, was one of the top listeners to Joe Rumore and the other WVOK personalities. So many of my childhood memories revolve around listening to WVOK--Our family getting ready for the Christmas Holidays while Joe Rumore shared his children's rendition of "Happy Holidays"; the song "I want a baby brother for Christmas": The singing dogs with their version of "Jingle Bells."

I also have wonderful memories of commercials from "Catfish King, "G G's in Park," and "Golden Eagle Table Syrpup, the Pride of Alabam." I am so grateful for this site!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting. :-)

I remember FaSoLa, and "Git Out and Vote" Another song that only Joe played every year at Graduation time was "Cap and Gown" by Marty Robbins. I cannot find anyone that I know from that era that remembers this song, and it is hard to find.

I grew up in Etowah County, and Joe, and his precious family and WVOK were a very big part of my life. I have lived in GA for the past 22 years, and this forum, and memories of Joe and family is a delight!

Thanks Guys,

Pat Briggs

WKLD (97.7 FM) in Oneonta, AL (my hometown) used to play "Fa-So-La Fourth" every year during the days leading up to Independence Day. Most of the same staff is still employed at the station. I bet they'd have all of the song details, along with a recording! (205) 625-3333 is their number.

My family gathers every year on the Fourth of July, and the FaSoLa song is a tradition at our celebrlations.  My cousing had a cassette tape of the song that has been copied and lost and found for years.  I have been looking for the writer and singer and was thrilled to find you post about the song. I read that you had posted the song on your website for fans to enjoy.   How can I hear the song?

Oh my gosh! I remember this song so well! My mom had a 45 record of it way back in the late '60s and my brother and I played it all the time. (We thought it was sooo funny!) Thanks for mentioning this on the forum because I had begun a web search for the song and could only remember just a bit of the lyrics.

By the way, my grandmother who livesin Jasper Alabama was an avid listener of Joe Rumore and WVOK. Consequently I was a listener too as a child and really enjoyed Joe's shows. He was so down home and comfortable that you felt just like you were listening to an old friend talk to you from the radio. My Granny bought and ate Golden Eagle Soppin' Syrup (the pride of Alabam!)
and most of the other products Joe advertised. Those were the good old days for sure..being a kid in Alabama and hearing Joe Rumore. Glad you have the site going and I'm looking forward to more on here soon. I'm going to show this website to my grandmother too who is now 89 years old. She is going to get the biggest kick out of knowing that Joe is being remembered so well! :)
Best always and keep up the good work!
